My story

I Have Seen What Assumptions Cost

I have spent more than four decades in safety, and one truth has followed me throughout my career:

The greatest risks are often not the known hazards. They are the assumptions that go unquestioned.

I help leaders move safety beyond policies, compliance, and assumptions, and rebuild it around humanity, accountability, leadership alignment, and measurable trust. At the end of every shift, success is not what was produced or what the numbers say. It is whether your employees, and the futures of their families, were protected.

My perspective was not built in a classroom. It was forged over more than four decades: six years with the U.S. Air Force Security Police, 23 years with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons, as a National Safety Examiner, five years as a Federal OSHA Investigator, seven years as CEO of Safety By Design Consulting Service, and eight years as a Senior Safety Consultant for Sentry Insurance across the Midwest.

I am also the author of three #1 bestsellers: The Faces of Safety and Those Left Behind When Tragedy Strikes, The Humanistic Side of Safety, and Bridging the Leadership Gap.

My speaking presentations and workshops move safety beyond rules, statistics, and slogans. They are interactive and thought-provoking. I challenge leaders and employees to examine the decisions, expectations, and behaviors that decide whether people return home safely to the families who depend on them.

My humanistic approach connects safety, leadership, accountability, trust, and organizational performance. Audiences remember the conversation long after the presentation ends.

But credentials are only part of the story.

I have witnessed the aftermath first hand.

I know what happens when a warning sign is dismissed, when a standard is known but not enforced, when an employee remains silent because trust has been lost, or when leadership believes something is happening on the floor that simply is not.

And I know what a preventable incident looks like when it is no longer a statistic on a dashboard.

It has a name.

It has a family.

It has an empty chair.

That is why I do this work.

Safety is not about production or quality. It is about protecting lives.

The 4 pillars

This is what I build with leaders

Leadership Alignment

Alignment closes the gap between what leaders intend and what employees experience. It turns organizational values into everyday leadership behavior.

Accountability

Accountability is not blame or punishment. It is the courage to address what matters, reinforce what is expected, and make sure what leadership allows matches what leadership says is important.

Trust

When people feel heard and respected, and see leaders act on what they hear, trust is earned instead of requested. Trust moves at the speed of consistency. Every leadership action strengthens it or weakens it.

Humanity

When leaders see the person behind the position, safety becomes more than compliance. It becomes a moral responsibility to protect, respect, and invest in your employees.

Start where change has the power to begin

For most organizations, the strongest starting point is not the frontline. It is the leadership table.

I start with Leadership Alignment: challenging assumptions, surfacing misalignment, clarifying expectations, and settling what leaders are prepared to own together.

Those four decades shape The Humanistic Shift™, my Executive Safety Leadership Alignment Program. The Humanistic Shift™ aligns your executive team on core values, definitions, expectations, accountability, and employee trust, so leadership speaks with one voice. The work includes a confidential assessment, executive dialogue, and a 30-, 60-, or 90-day action plan. Learn about Executive Alignment

Once leadership is aligned, I take the work into the organization: supervisors first, then targeted presentations and workshops, then the frontline, where leadership decisions become everyday reality.

The direction is intentional: align the top, equip the middle, engage the frontline, and change the experience.

Lasting culture change cannot be pushed up from the floor. Leadership has to model it from the top.

Why I do this

People, and the people left behind

Safety is about protecting lives and the families waiting at home. A policy does not hug a child at the end of a shift. A slogan does not sit at a kitchen table when someone does not come home.

I still do this so workers go home. God bless the families who already know what that costs.

FAQ

Questions leaders ask

Direct answers. Then a conversation if you want one.

What rooms do you work in?

Corporate functions, executive leadership retreats, national safety conferences, and industry training workshops. The room changes. The four pillars do not.

How do I start?

Schedule a 30-minute conversation. Tell me your dates, your audience, and what is not working. I will tell you if this work is a fit.

Can the work be tailored to our industry?

Yes. I build sessions around the demands on your floor, not a generic deck. High-risk operations need that. So does every team that is tired of slogans.

What do you cover?

Executive alignment through The Humanistic Shift™, speaking presentations, and workshops. Leadership alignment, accountability, trust, and humanity. The human cost of getting safety wrong. Safety as a core value, not a compliance checklist.

Start With a 30-Minute Conversation
