Coloring Your Way to Safety: Small Moments. Meaningful Conversations. Lessons for Life.
When was the last time you sat beside a child, opened a coloring book, and let the conversation take you somewhere meaningful?
A child may see a playground, a school, or a home on the page. A parent, grandparent, teacher, or relative sees an opportunity to ask:
“What would you do?” “Who could you ask for help?” “How can we keep each other safe?”
Those simple questions can turn time together into something a child carries beyond the coloring page.
That is why I created Coloring Your Way to Safety at Home, School, and Play, a multicultural coloring book available in English and Spanish.
I wanted to give children and the people who love and teach them a welcoming way to talk about safety while enjoying one another’s company.
Everyone has a place in this coloring book.
Parents can make coloring part of family time. Grandparents can share stories and listen to a child’s questions. Aunts, uncles, and older siblings can join in. Teachers can use a page to begin a classroom conversation and invite families to continue it at home.
As children color, we have an opportunity to listen. What do they notice? What concerns them? What do they understand, and where do they need our guidance?
We do not have to rush to finish the page. The time we spend beside them matters.
The book’s multicultural illustrations and English and Spanish editions offer families different ways to share a purpose: helping children think about their safety at home, at school, and at play.
Imagine the same conversation continuing from the classroom to the kitchen table, then to a grandparent’s home. Each person brings a different story, but the child hears a consistent message: You matter. Your safety matters. You can talk to us.
To parents, teachers, grandparents, relatives, and community leaders: I invite you to bring this book into the lives of the children you care about.
Give it as a gift. Share it with a teacher. Bring it to a family gathering. Then sit down, open the crayons, and enjoy the conversation.
They are only small once. Make precious memories while helping them learn lessons they can carry with them.
